Squigglytick Origins
Squigglytick Education was established in 2002 by John Rice. It is a sole owner freelance company that works in partnership with a range of private and commercial partners, HE institutions and schools.
I work in a variety of capacities, as a teacher, a tutor in ITT and as an educational author. I have also provided teaching assistant training and assessment for several organisations. This is quite sufficient as a career and I find any attempt to broaden this portfolio is counterproductive. Education and technology are fast-paced and I am wary of anyone who claims to be able to offer guidance on every matter within education. I do however have an enormous range of contacts and when I can't provide the support that is required I can usually recommend someone who can.
I have been both a teacher and a headteacher and the need to teach is firmly established within my methodology: ivory towers are built a layer at a time and usually to their occupant's surprise. Although from a practical perspective I no longer need to teach I believe it is a prerequisite if I am to offer appropriate advice to trainees and colleagues. Schools regularly employ me as a supply teacher and I am happy to fulfil this role.
I am frequently asked about the origin of the company name. It's a simple explanation; I wanted to include a tick on the company logo and every tick I created on the computer was either too straight or too squiggly. Of course, 'straight-tick' education probably better conveys my intentions but squigglytick is far more fun to write and to say!
